Correcting spine issues with minimally invasive surgery
Just a few years ago, you could expect to spend an entire year recovering from spine surgery. The conventional method required a long, highly invasive incision, followed by a weeklong hospital stay and an extended period of healing and recovery - often months, if not an entire year.
Today, minimally invasive surgery, which is also known as keyhole surgery, allows patients to recover relatively quickly with very little scarring or residual problems. Using an endoscope, surgeons insert a tiny video camera into a small incision. There, they can get a superior view of the operating field, viewing the area on high-resolution television screens in the operating room.
Once the problem area is located, additional instruments are inserted through the small incisions to repair or remove tissue, mend damaged areas or correct deformities. When the surgery is completed, the incisions are closed with a few sutures and dressed with surgical tape. In a few months, the incisions are barely noticeable.
MIS is particularly suited for spinal fusion procedures, which is often used on degenerative disks, deformity corrections, such as that required in cases of scoliosis, and herniated disk repair.
Compared to traditional procedures, MIS has revolutionized the operating room, allowing surgeons to conduct procedures the are less traumatic, heal faster, cause less pain and put patients on the road to recovery much more quickly than those procedures that were considered state-of-the-art just a few years ago.
As a leader in MIS for spinal issues, Florida Hospital’s team of talented surgeons, skilled nurses and highly trained specialists are prepared to offer you unparalleled patient care during your procedure as well as before and after it.
