The sad fact is that currently one in three women will have to have a hysterectomy by the age of 60. Whether it’s for pelvic or uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine prolapse or menstrual issues, a simple, radical or total hysterectomy is often the only option available.
At Florida Hospital, we understand how traumatic the prospect of a hysterectomy can be, not only for the patient but for family and friends as well. Fortunately, Florida Hospitals is a center of excellence for hysterectomy surgery.
In fact, we utilize a special surgical procedure that was pioneered by Florida Hospital’s gynecologist, Steven McCarus, MD. Called the McCarus Technique, the MIS procedure doesn’t require large incisions, meaning you recover more quickly and experience less pain. What’s more, the procedure takes less time to perform and reduces the chance of complications.
In short, the McCarus Technique allows the surgeon to remove the uterus and, if necessary, the fallopian tubes, through three small incisions in the abdomen. The surgeon uses precision tools combined with state-of-the-art ultrasonic technology to remove tissue with very little bleeding. Most patients can leave the hospital the next day, compared to a week with the traditional approach. What’s more, you can return to your regular level of activity within a week or two instead of the usual two months.
Florida Hospital also utilizes the da Vinci® robotic system to perform a hysterectomy. The system provides the surgeon with a high definition, 3D view of the operating environment and allows the physician to have a high degree of precision and control when manipulating the robot’s remote instruments, which have been inserted through small incisions that will be barely noticeable after surgery.
Florida Hospital’s revolutionary tools and cutting edge procedures ensure that your surgery will be less painful, produce less scarring, reduce your chance of infection and get you back to enjoying your normal routine quickly, especially when compared to the old-fashioned way of performing surgery.
