Caring for your heart while healing your mind and spirit

One of the preeminent cardiac programs in the nation, the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute stands at the forefront of cardiac excellence. Performing more than 82,000 open-heart procedures since 1981, the institute sees more than 70,000 patients annually.

At Florida Hospital, every step of your MIS cardiac surgery is closely coordinated by your primary physician as well as our team of board-certified cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons. In many cases, minimally invasive surgical procedures are replacing traditional open heart surgeries, since the benefits of the MIS approach are so great, including reduced risk of infection and complications, less scarring, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.

Some of the most popular MIS procedures include the use of balloon angioplasty and stents to treat cardiovascular blockages. Other open-heart procedures, such as bypass grafts, are also becoming good candidates for minimally invasive surgery at Florida Hospital.

Looking for new ways to improve patient outcomes, Florida Hospital leads the way in developing and offering new procedures that take advantage of advances in robot-assisted technologies that allow surgeons to do even more exacting and precise surgical procedures that until now would have been impossible using minimally invasive surgery. This includes the prospect of repairing mitral valve defects in younger patients using MIS. Most of these procedures are performed through keyhole incisions, which are extremely small and allow miniature instruments to be guided to the areas requiring surgical intervention. Instead of requiring large chest incisions, the small incisions required heal quickly and leave very little scarring.

Florida Hospital is home to one of the highest volume centers of mitral valve surgeries performed in the country, and we have advanced the techniques necessary for predictable, long-term valve repairs, in addition to alternative and less-invasive approaches. The same team of highly skilled experts works together every day to ensure each patient receives the best results and optimal outcomes. Acquired or congenital disease of any cardiac valve can affect the patient's quality of life or even become life threatening. Between 2004 and 2008, the surgeons at the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute performed more valve procedures than any other program in the Southeastern United States, with more than 2,100 repairs and replacements of damaged heart valves. And because of the experience gained through such a high volume of procedures, surgeons from around the world travel to our facilities to take part in our Center of Excellence training program, where they witness firsthand the groundbreaking techniques utilized by our physicians.
